about

Donna Burke was born in Perth but now lives in Tokyo. She provides the English announcements on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. It’s funny to hear an Australian accent when you’re travelling around Japan on the Shinky. The sampled taiko drums on this track were played by karakuri dolls at the Karakuri Museum in Takayama and the snippet of music at the end was from a recording I made of a chidonya group at a sake festival in Hida Gifu. I later discovered that there is an entire sub-genre of music based on Japanese train sounds, which is called oto-tetsu. It’s pretty cool.
