My dog Luffy is probably my greatest musical influence. He’s always there, at my feet. He seems to have very strong musical tastes. He likes upbeat funk, like the Pointer Sisters, or Rick James or the Jackson Five. He has no interest in rock and roll, and hates Karlheinz Stockhausen so much he will scratch at me until I turn it off. But his favourite song has always been Dark Star by the Grateful Dead, which I would play to him to calm him during thunderstorms or fireworks. As I write this, Luffy has just turned fifteen years old. For a while his hearing seemed to be getting worse, and the vet has confirmed that he’s pretty much deaf at this point. So this is a song for a dog who can no longer hear it, sadly.
僕の愛犬ルフィーは、恐らく僕の音楽に一番影響を与えているだろう。ルフィーは僕の足元にいつも居て、彼は音楽の趣味にこだわりがあるようで、ポインター・シスターズ、リック・ジェームス、ジャクソン５のような、アップビートのファンクが好きなんだ。ロックには興味がなくて、カールハインツ・シュトックハウゼンが大嫌い。あまりにも嫌いなもんで、曲を止めるまで僕をひっかき続けるんだ。でも彼の一番好きな曲はいつだってグレイトフル・デッドのダークスターで、彼をなだめる為に落雷の時や花火の時に流してあげてるよ。今これを書いてる現在、ルフィーはちょうど15歳になった。彼の耳はどんどん遠くなってるようだったんだけど、ついに獣医さんがもう殆ど聞こえないって診断した。だから悲しい事に、この曲は耳が聞こえなくなってしまった犬の為の曲なのさ。
