Some years ago Kate went to Almería in Spain, where most of the European Westerns were filmed, and brought back a present: a twisted and rusty old nail she took from the remains of the set of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. When I was growing up I never realised that the colour of the sky was different in different places. I thought the distinctive colour of the sky in movies made in Almería were the product of some quality of the film stock they used, or simply the patina of age. But when I saw the photographs that Kate took I recognised the colour of the sky, which was already as familiar to me as if I had been there myself.
何年か前に僕のパートナーのケイトがヨーロッパ産ウェスタン映画の殆どが撮影された地、スペインのアルメリアに行ってきた。その時のお土産に「続・夕陽のガンマン」の撮影跡地から拾ってきた、錆び曲がった古い釘を私にくれた。小さいころ、空の色が場所によって違うなんて僕は全然気付かなくてさ。アルメリアで撮影された映画の、独特な空の色は、使用されているフィルムのクオリティーによるものか、もしくはただ単に年期が入ってるからだと思っていたんだ。でもケイトが撮影してきた写真を見た時、その空の色には見覚えがあった。まるで僕がそこに行ったことがあるみたいにね。
